Second-year players Adam Vooris (Columbia) and Thomas Perren (Schalick, NJ) were named co-captains of the 2000-2001 men's basketball team at Hudson Valley Community College.
Vooris, a six-foot-five forward who played varsity basketball, baseball and volleyball at Columbia, was the third-leading shooter and shot blocker for Hudson Valley last season, The physical education major hit 50 percent of his field goal attempts and swatted 21 shots.
"Adam worked hard during the off-season to improve his strength and overall game," head coach Vince Medici said. "He'll be a solid contributor with our post offense and on defense. He'll also be a leader on and off the court."
Perren, also a six-five forward, led the Vikings in field goal percentage last season, hitting 57.8 percent of his shots. A drafting major and a member of Hudson Valley's Student Senate, Perren also averaged 11.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in 1999-2000.
"Tom was an important part of our game last year, and we'll need him to increase his offensive output this year," Medici said. "We also need him to continue dominating the boards and to be a team leader."
After advancing to the NJCAA Division III championship tournament for the first time in school history in 1998-99, Hudson Valley captured the Mountain Valley Conference title in 1999-2000. The Vikings finished the season with a 24-6 record and a national ranking, and Medici was named Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year for the second-time in his career. Now entering his sixth season as head coach at Hudson Valley, Medici has won 97 games.
Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, Hudson Valley Community College has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining.
