Hudson Valley's Basketball Teams, Loaded With
Local Names, Schedule Joint Media Day
The men's and women's basketball teams at Hudson Valley Community College will hold a Media Day this afternoon. Players and coaches will be available for interviews and photographs from 4 to 5 p.m. in the gym at Hudson Valley's McDonough Sports Complex.
Both squads will rely heavily on local players. Of the 14 players on the men's team, 13 hail from the Capital Region, including: Kyle Miller (Columbia), R.J. Mann (Canajoharie), Billy Etue (Heatly) and Jason McKinney (South Glens Falls). The entire women's roster is comprised of Albany-area players, including: Kara Sheehan (Catholic Central), Meghan Squires (Hoosic Valley), Lindsey Bradt (Bishop Maginn) and Megan Davis (Greenwich).
Men's head coach Vince Medici, entering his sixth season at Hudson Valley, will be hunting for win number 100 early in the 2000-2001 campaign. In five years, he has posted a 97-50 record, taking the Vikings to the NJCAA Division III national tournament in 1998-99 and earning a top-10 ranking in the nation last year. He has twice been named Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year.
Colleen Ferris is entering her second season as head coach of the women's basketball team at Hudson Valley. The Lady Vikings won seven games in the second half of 1999-2000. Ferris, who played four years of basketball at SUNY Cortland and served an assistant coach at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, said she has a highly athletic group of women this year.
Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, Hudson Valley Community College has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining.
