Hudson Valley Community College Basketball Team Brings In A Tall Crop Of Recruits
Hudson Valley Community College men's basketball coach Vince Medici recently announced his incoming recruits for the 2000-01 season. The following student athletes have verbally committed to Hudson Valley: Jeremy Scheible (Greenwich), Paul Bowe (Hudson Falls), Bryan Gaudio (Schalmont), Billy Etue (Heatly), Jason McKinney (South Glens Falls), Dustin Manny (Catholic Central) and Jeremy Freeland (The College of Saint Rose).
"We lost a few real good players to graduation this year, but this class of recruits looks like one of the best I've ever had," said Medici, who has been at the helm for Hudson Valley for five seasons.
In that time, the Vikings have racked up 97 wins and made an appearance at the NJCAA Division III national championship. This past season, Hudson Valley posted a 24-6 record and earned a No. 10 ranking in the nation. In addition, Medici was named Mountain Valley Coach of the Year and earned Second Team All-Region III coaching honors.
"I'm very excited about these players," Medici said. "They all have the potential to help us right away."
At 6-foot-10 and 260 pounds, Freeland is the biggest incoming player. A transfer from The College of Saint Rose, the center is originally from Duncannon, Pennsylvania. A two-time Mid-Penn Capital Division All-Star at Susquenita High, Freeland scored over 1,000 points and grabbed more than 900 rebounds during his high school career.
Etue led Heatly High to the Section II Class D championship during his senior year. The 6-5, 200-pound guard/forward scored 22 points per game, fifth best in Section II. He also averaged 12 rebounds and four assists.
Scheible (5-11, 150) averaged 16 points per game during his senior campaign, second best on the Greenwich squad. The point guard also contributed five rebounds and four assists per game. Greenwich placed second in the Wasaren League during the regular season.
Bowe is also a 5-11, 150 pound point guard. He averaged eight points, four assists and two rebounds per game in 1999-2000, helping Hudson Falls High capture the Foothills Council regular season title. Bowe hit 22 three-pointers.
Manny (6-4, 200) averaged nine points and eight rebounds per game this past season. The forward also contributed five assists per game and was a two-year starter for the Crusaders.
Gaudio (5-11, 155) led Schalmont High with 14 points per game in 1999-2000. In addition to pulling down an average of seven rebounds and dishing out four assists, the shooting guard drilled 24 three-pointers.
McKinney (6-5, 175) topped South Glens Falls High with 18 points per game during his senior campaign. The guard/forward also contributed eight rebounds and three assists per game.
"These guys will all have a chance to come in and fight for starting spots," Medici said. "And they should all see time. I'm expecting good things from these players."
Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
