The Hudson Valley Community College football team (1-0) defeated Utica JV (0-1) 58-13 on Sunday evening.
The Vikings opened their first four series with touchdowns to take an early 28-0 lead in the middle of the second half. Darrius Bryant (Indian River/Philadelphia, PA) scored on the opening drive on a 20-yard pass from Rafael Hidalgo (Franklin K. Lane/Woodhaven), and then Daquan Henclewood (Manchester Memorial/Manhester, NH) and Johnnie Martin (Donnego/Mount Joy, PA) would score on the ensuing possessions from nine and one-yard out to take a 21-0 lead. Henclewood, Jaylen McIntyre (CBA/Latham), and Jamal Williams (Choate Rosemary/New Bedford, CT) would each score on runs later in the game en route to a 45-point victory. McIntyre would lead all rushers with 174 yards on 21 carries and one score.
Freshman Duke Santora (Kingsford/Suffolk, VA) stole the show on special teams as he blocked two punts and recovered both of them for Viking touchdowns. Santora blocked a punt in the second quarter that rolled into the endzone that he recovered, and then he blocked another one in the third quarter where he picked it up from 18-yards out and ran it in for a touchdown.
Defensively, the Vikings held strong only giving up 13 points. The Pioneers' first score came on a 75-yard pass in the third quarter, and then on a one-yard run later in the quarter. Aside from the 75-yard pass, the Vikings only gave up 59 yards of total offense. Utica ran the ball 32 times for just eight yards, as opposed to the Vikings 57 rushes for 338 yards.
Leading the defense was Doran Redparth (John F. Kennedy/Rockville, MD) who recorded a team-high 2.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles. All three of Jon Miller's (Pelham Memorial/Pelham) tackles accounted for tackles for loss, and sophomore Derrick Tate (Edmondson/Baltimore City, MD) added 4.5 tackles in the win.
The Vikings host Lackawanna on Saturday at 2 p.m.
