The Hudson Valley Community College football team (3-0) defeated #17 Dean College (3-1), 18-14, on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings trailed 14-0 at halftime, but the Vikings put up 18 unanswered points in the second half on the nation's number one defense to pull the upset victory. Dean had only allowed 12 points through the first three games this season heading into today's contest. The Vikings defense produced the first score of the day when Ashton McKenzie (Dewitt Clinton/Bronx) got Hudson Valley on the board with a pick-six in the third quarter. Trailing 14-6 heading into the fourth quarter, Rafael Hidalgo (Brooklyn Lab/Queens) plunged in the endzone for a score to cut the lead to 14-12. The Vikings defense came up with a big fourth down stop late in the game to give them one last chance. Hidalgo led the team down the field and hit Craig Hardgers (Greece Olympia/Rochester) for the game-winning touchdown with 30 seconds left.
This is the first time since 2005 the Vikings have started the season with a 3-0 record. The football team hosts Erie next Saturday at noon.
