The Hudson Valley Community College (5-4) football team could not overcome an early two-touchdown deficit and suffered a 17-16 loss to non-league foe Navy Prep (2-5) this afternoon in Troy.
Navy Prep scored on its first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead. Quarterback Brian Blick (Greenville, NC) ran it in from five yards out with 11:25 remaining in the first quarter. Blick then hit Aaron Santiago (Kapolei, HI) with a 22-yard touchdown pass 10 minutes later.
Hudson Valley climbed its way back into the ballgame in the second quarter. Sophomore kicker Edmund Wallace (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) capped a 55-yard drive with a 25-yard field goal to cut the Vikings deficit to 14-3 with 12:52 remaining in the half.
The Vikings then trailed 14-10 after freshman quarterback Shamar Carr (Middletown, CT/Middletown High School) hit freshman wide receiver Matt Miltner (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) with an 18-yard touchdown pass.
The Vikings trailed 17-10 midway through the fourth quarter before Carr's six-yard touchdown run capped off an 80-yard drive with 6:06 remaining in the game. However, the extra point attempt was wide right and left the Vikings trailing 17-16.
Hudson Valley had one more chance on offense with three minutes remaining on their own seven yard line. Hudson Valley drove the ball to the 50-yard line but was stopped when Carr's pass was intercepted by Kenny Munson (Staten Island, NY) with 32 second remaining.
Blick rushed for 81 yards and completed 10-of-15 passes for 137 yards to lead Navy Prep.
Freshman running back Reidrick Alceus (Haverstraw/North Rockland High School) had 86 yards rushing for the Vikings.
Freshman linebacker Maradona Alcime (Everett, MA/Everett High School) had 10 tackles, including a sack for Hudson Valley's defense.
Hudson Valley will complete its season next Saturday, November 10 when it hosts Erie Community College in the first-ever Region III championship game. The game is tentatively scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Union College in Schenectady.
