As the fall athletic season winds down, four Hudson Valley Community College athletic teams will be in action in their biggest events of the season thus far.
The women's soccer team is 11-5-1 and has advanced to the NJCAA Region III final four this weekend to be held on the campus of Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden. Hudson Valley, the tournament's seventh seed, will meet third seeded Herkimer County Community College at 12:15 on Saturday, October 27. The winner will advance to the Region III championship game at noon the following day with a chance to go to the NJCAA Division III championship national semifinals.
Sophomore Brenna Mereness (Castleton/Maple Hill High School) has already scored 47 goals in her illustrious career at Hudson Valley, including the game-winner with less than eight minutes remaining in a 2-1 quarterfinal win over No. 2 Tompkins Cortland last Tuesday.
The football team is 5-2 and still in the thick of the Northeast Football Conference race. The Vikings will face their toughest opponent of the season when they host 11th-ranked and undefeated Dean College at 1 p.m. this Saturday.
Hudson Valley's defense ranks first in the conference allowing just 10.3 points per game. Hudson Valley has allowed just one rushing touchdown all season. Sophomore David James (Forestville, MD/Oxon Hill High School) leads the defense with 49 tackles.
Hudson Valley's women's cross country team, which is ranked No. 9 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll, will be competing in the Region III championship hosted by SUNY Delhi. The race begins at 11 a.m.
The volleyball team will be competing at the Corning Invitational on Saturday with a chance to qualify for the Region III tournament when the pairings are announced on Sunday.
