Hudson Valley Community College (4-1/2-1 Northeast Football Conference) overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat 18th-ranked Erie Community College (3-1/1-1), 26-22, this afternoon in Orchard Park.
Hudson Valley, which trailed 16-6 at the half, got the spark it needed late in the third quarter when freshman Leroy George (Clairton, PA/Clairton High School) returned an interception 46 yards for the touchdown to cut the Vikings deficit to 16-13.
Hudson Valley then took a 20-16 lead on a 15-yar bootleg run by freshman quarterback Shamar Carr (Middletown, CT/Middletown High School) with 10:46 remaining in the game. The four-play, 27-yard drive was set up after the Vikings recovered a fumbled punt.
After stopping the Kats on their next possession, Hudson Valley rattled off a 14-play, 80-yard drive that used up 6:49 of the clock. The drive was capped off when Carr hit sophomore tight end Tyshon Gurley (Newark, NJ/Central High School) with a six-yard touchdown pass. The pass came on a fourth down and five and a defender holding Carr's legs.
Erie quickly drove down the field and scored on quarterback Andre Barbosa's (Hyannis, MA/Barnstable High School) third touchdown pass of the game to cut its deficit to 26-22. However the Vikings recovered the onside kick and were able to run out the clock.
Hudson Valley, which punted only once in the game, controlled the clock. The Vikings executed 83 offensive plays and amassed 39:13 of possession time. Erie had just 47 plays and 20:47 of possession time.
Sophomore running back Bobby Ransom (Brooklyn/North Florida Christian School) carried the ball 25 times for 107 yards to lead the Vikings. Freshman Reidrick Alceus (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland High School) had 10 carries for 70 yards
Carr rushed for 45 yards and completed four-of-six passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. He entered the game after starting quarterback Dan McLaughlin (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) left due to an injury. McLaughlin completed 12-of-16 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Freshman Brian Fowler (Geneva/Geneva High School) carried the ball 17 times for 124 yards to lead Erie.
Hudson Valley will return to action next Saturday, October 6 when it visits Nassau Community College.
