Sophomore quarterback AJ McKenna (Scranton, PA) completed seven-of-nine passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns to lead Lackawanna College to an 18-13 win over Hudson Valley Community College earlier today in Troy.
Lackawanna, which is ranked No. 5 in the latest NJCAA national poll, improves its record to 2-0 and 1-0 in the Northeast Football Conference and ups its winning streak to 13 straight games. Hudson Valley drops its record to 2-1 and 0-1 in the conference.
McKenna hit Keith Carlos (Bridgeport, CT) with a nine-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring with 7:14 remaining in the opening quarter. The extra point attempt was blocked. The scoring play was set up after a 46-yard pass from McKenna to William Johnson (Odenton, MD) earlier in the drive.
Hudson Valley responded to take a 7-6 lead with four seconds remaining in the opening quarter on a 30-yard touchdown run from sophomore Bobby Ransom (Brooklyn/North Florida Christian School). Ransom finished the game with 18 carries for 84 yards.
McKenna was responsible for giving Lackawanna an 18-7 lead at the break with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Donald Jones (Plainfield, NJ), and a 16-yard strike to Jones in the second quarter.
Neither team was unable to score again until Hudson Valley freshman quarterback Shamar Carr (Middletown, CT/Middletown High School) punched it in with 5:45 remaining in the game.
Hudson Valley would receive the ball again with three minutes remaining but was unable to pick up a first down.
Defensively, sophomore linebacker David James (Forestville, MD.Oxon Hill High School) had 12 tackles for Hudson Valley. Sophomore Gerard Atkinson (Yonkers/Roosevelt High School) had nine tackles and a sack.
Hudson Valley will look to get back on track when it hosts Alfred State College at noon next Saturday, September 22.
