Hudson Valley Community College's (1-0) defense allowed just 60 yards, recorded seven sacks and was responsible for 14 points in the Vikings 36-6 win over Berean Institute (0-1) today in Troy.
Freshman defensive end Bobby Sommerville (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) gave the Vikings their first points of the season when he sacked Berean's quarterback in the end zone with 1:16 remaining in the opening quarter. Sommerville would finish his college debut with six tackles, including five tackles-for-loss.
Freshman Eugene Cooper (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon High School) returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown that gave Hudson Valley a 9-0 lead.
The Vikings took a 16-0 lead at the break when freshman quarterback Dan McLaughlin (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) hit freshman Shamar Carr (Middletown, CT/Middletown High School) with a 44-yard touchdown pass as time expired. McLaughlin finished the day six-for-14 for 99 yards and a touchdown.
Freshman cornerback Ian White (Washington, DC/Arch Bishop Carroll High School) put the game out of reach with a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown with 7:46 remaining in the third quarter.
Hudson Valley also got two late fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 20-yard run by freshman running back Alonzo Powell (Nyack/Nyack High School) and a five-yard fumble return by freshman linebacker Gavin Nelson (Somerville, MA/Somerville High School). Nelson also recorded two sacks and blocked a punt in the game.
Sophomore running back Bobby Ranson (Brooklyn/North Florida Christian School) paced Hudson Valley's offense with 101 rushing yards and two catches for 17 yards.
Sophomores Nick Carr (Albany/Colonie High School) and Jeremy Pruitt (Far Rockaway/Far Rockaway High School) each had nine tackles to lead the Hudson Valley defense.
Hudson Valley returns to action on Friday, September 7 when it travels to West Point to meet Army Prep. The game is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m.
