The 17th-ranked Hudson Valley Community College football team shutout Morrisville State College, 14-0, in rain-soaked conditions earlier this afternoon in Troy.
Sophomore Dane Samuels (New City/Clarkstown High School) put the Vikings on the board with a one yard touchdown run with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter. The eight-play, 29-yard scoring drive was set up when sophomore Richard Anderson (Brooklyn/Boys and Girls High School) recovered one of 10 Morrisville fumbles on the day (Hudson Valley recovered four of them.).
On the ensuing Morrisville possession, Hudson Valley freshman James Romain (Far Rockaway/Far Rockaway High School) picked off a Mustangs pass and returned it 27 yards to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead.
Neither team was able to generate a lot of offense in the rain storm.
Hudson Valley finished with 149 total yards, including 118 yards through the air. Sophomore quarterback Jon Shanks (Millbrook/Millbrook High School) completed 10-of-19 passes for 118 yards and two interceptions.
Four of his passes were completed to freshman Tim Bush (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) for 31 yards.
The Mustangs managed 143 total yards. Sophomore Hannibal Fleming (Brooklyn/John Jay High School) carried the ball 21 times for 75 yards.
Sophomore John Fuschino (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa High School) paced Hudson Valley's defense with nine tackles and a forced fumble. Freshman linebacker Lamar Gordon-Holmes (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville High School) made seven stops and recovered a fumble.
Ryan Greene (Pittsburgh, PA/Langley High School) and Zimier McCloud (Sankford, PA/George Washington High School) made 10 stops apiece for Morrisville.
With the win, Hudson Valley improves its record to 4-2 on the season and 2-2 in the Northeast Football Conference. The Vikings also snapped a three-game losing streak to the Mustangs which began in 2002. Morrisville falls to 3-3 on the year and 2-3 in conference play.
Hudson Valley will host Alfred State College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 15.
