Over the next 17 days, the Hudson Valley Community College football team should see where it stands in the Northeast Football Conference. Hudson Valley plays its next three games against teams that are receiving votes in the NJCAA poll beginning with this Saturday's contest at 15th-ranked Nassau Community College. The game kicks off at 5 p.m.
It's an important early season meeting between Nassau (2-1/1-1 NFC) and Hudson Valley (2-1/1-0 NFC). The winner will take the early lead in the East Division of the Northeast Football conference.
Hudson Valley defeated Nassau, 14-7, a year ago. It was only the second time in 27 all-time meetings that the Vikings had defeated Nassau.
The Vikings defense ranks first in the conference and third in the NJCAA in total defense, allowing 169.3 yards per game. Sophomore defensive end Jonal St.-Dic (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth High School) leads the way with 27 tackles, including a conference-high 13 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks.
Hudson Valley's offense also ranks first in the conference in scoring offense. Sophomore quarterback Jonah Chappell (Brownfield, ME/Fryeburg Academy) has thrown for 343 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.
Nassau has shut out two of its three opponents and has only allowed one touchdown and 13 points this season.
After this weekend, Hudson Valley hosts No. 8 Erie Community College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, and travels to Morrisville State College on Saturday, October 9.
