After its first full week of practice, the Hudson Valley Community College football team competed in its annual Green-White Game in a driving rainstorm on Saturday morning.
Hudson Valley's offense gained 316 yards on 88 plays, but reached the end zone only once. Freshman running back Kendall Porter (Front Royal, VA/Warren County High School) ran 66 yards for the score to open the fourth drive of the scrimmage.
"The weather made it difficult for us to execute today," said Head Coach Bob Jojo. "We made mistakes, offensively and defensively, but I was encouraged by the intensity on the field. Our guys got after each other today."
Despite the rain, Hudson Valley quarterbacks were able to complete 13 of 29 passes for 119 yards. Sophomore Jonah Chappell (Brownfield, ME/Fryeburg Academy) was four-of-six for 21 yards.
Freshman fullback Ervin Battle-Baldwin (Richmond, VA/Huguenot) had eight carries for 52 yards. Three of his carries went for 10 or more yards.
The defensive highlights included sacks by freshmen Jamel Edwards (Bronx/Lehman High School), Chuck Valente (Wynantskill/Troy High School), Jacob Arndt (Dyer, IN/Lake Central High School) and sophomore Orane Whittaker (Yonkers/Berkshire High School). The defense got interceptions from freshmen Moneace Lavoil (Newark, NJ/Malcolm X Shabazz High School) and Matthew Tomlin (Claverack/Taconic Hills High School).
Hudson Valley will open its season at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 4 at Navy Prep. The home opener is at noon on Sunday, September 12 against RPI JV.
