The Hudson Valley Community College defense allowed only 31 yards of total offense to record its third shutout of the season in a 24-0 win over SUNY Canton earlier today in Troy. It's the first time since 1993 that Hudson Valley has shut out three opponents in a season.
Hudson Valley improves to 4-1 on the year and 2-1 in the Northeast Football Conference (NFC). Canton falls to 1-5 and 0-3 in the NFC.
Sophomore running back Emmanuel Marc (Spring Valley/Spring Valley High School) carried the ball 29 times for 169 yards and one touchdown to lead Hudson Valley, which amassed 384 yards of total offense on the day. With his performance, Marc becomes the first Hudson Valley player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a career. He currently has 2,137 rushing yards.
Sophomore quarterback Ryan Gribulis (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley High School) connected with sophomore wide receiver Brandon Guy (Lynn, MA/Lynn English High School) for a 24-yard touchdown with 50 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Vikings a 10-0 lead going into the break.
Freshman running back Malcolm Jackson (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth High School) and Marc each had two-yard touchdown runs in the third quarter to give the Vikings a 24-0 lead. Jackson finished with 31 yards on six carries.
Canton had the ball inside the Hudson Valley 35 yard line four times in the fourth quarter, but fumbled the ball away three times and turned it over on downs once.
Sophomore Hugh Brillinessite (Miami, FL) carried the ball 19 times for 40 yards to pace the Canton offense.
Hudson Valley forced five Canton turnovers-three fumbles and two interceptions-in the game, which was played in rain-soaked conditions.
Sophomore linebacker Danny Pizzarelli (Poughkeepsie/F.D. Roosevelt High School) had nine tackles, including four tackles-for-loss to lead the Hudson Valley defense. Freshman linebacker Shonda Faulkner (Poughkeepsie/Puoghkeepsie High School) had five tackles, including one sack, a forced fumble and two pass break ups. Sophomore linebacker John Howell IV (Columbia, SC/Lower Richland High School) and sophomore cornerback Jermaine Toney (Bishopville, SC/Lee Central High School) each came away with interceptions.
Hudson Valley will travel to Erie Community College on Saturday, October 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Canton returns home to face Dean College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
