Six Hudson Valley Community College student-athletes recently were named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic All-Americans and two Vikings - cross country runner Courtney Colton (Ichabod Crane H.S.) and soccer player Anne Evans (Ballston Spa H.S.) - were honored with NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American status.
To earn Distinguished Academic All-American status, a student-athlete must establish herself as the best-of-the-best in the classroom, posting a grade point average (GPA) of 3.8 better.
Colton, an Individual Studies major, compiled a 3.86 GPA. Evans, an Engineering Science major, tallied a 3.81 GPA.
The following student-athletes earned Academic All-American status by posting a GPA of 3.6 or better: football player Stephen Behrens (Chatham H.S.); basketball players Paul Bowe (Hudson Falls H.S.), Lindsey Bradt (Bishop Maginn H.S.) and Jeremy Schneible (Greenwich H.S.); soccer player Desmond Gomes (Hamamui Secondary, Tanzania); and hockey player Luke Nally (Burnt Hills H.S.).
In the 2001-02 academic year, Hudson Valley's athletic teams combined to win 65 percent of their contests. The college's softball team traveled to Illinois for the national championship tournament and finished second in the country, and the women's basketball team placed seventh in the nation. Hudson Valley's football team won the Northeast Football Conference, and the baseball and bowling squads each added a Mountain Valley Conference title. Additionally, three Vikings earned Region III Player-of-the-Year status and eight were honored with All-American status.
