Otto Guenther Winner Will Attend Fordham On A Full Football Scholarship
Jim Canfield of Troy was recently honored with Hudson Valley Community College's Otto Guenther Memorial Award, presented each year to the individual who demonstrates the best combination of academic and athletic success.
Canfield, a sophomore, played just one year of football at Hudson Valley. He made sure this past season was an impressive one, however. In addition to earning President's List status for his attributes as a scholar, the rugged 5-foot-9 defensive back garnered First Team All-Northeast Football Conference status on the strength of five interceptions, 60 tackles (38 solo) and six pass breakups.
Canfield, who carried a 3.54 grade-point average during the Fall 2000 semester - the same time he was playing football for Hudson Valley - recorded 17 tackles against Navy Prep. He was a key part of a secondary that allowed just 73 yards passing per game.
Canfield, who came to Hudson Valley from Troy High School, will next attend Fordham University on a full football scholarship. He will join former Troy High teammate Dan Breen, a Hudson Valley graduate who was Fordham's third-leading tackler in 2000.
Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business, Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, Hudson Valley Community College has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining.
