Football Team's MVP Will Attend Appalachian State On A Full Scholarship
Derrick Black of Tarboro, N.C. was recently presented with Hudson Valley Community College's Thomas Cahill Memorial Award, presented each year to the college's outstanding male athlete. He also was named Most Valuable Player of the 2000 Hudson Valley football team.
In this past football season, Black, a sophomore defensive back, became Hudson Valley's first post-season First Team All-American honoree in four years. He recorded a Northeast Football Conference-high eight interceptions in 2000 and was chosen as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year.
Among the Hudson Valley records Black holds are: most interceptions in a career (12); longest interception return (98 yards); most interception return yards in a season (303); most interception return yards in a career (392); and most interceptions returned for a touchdown in a career (two).
Black, who came to Hudson Valley from North Carolina's Tarboro High School, will attend Appalachian State on a full football scholarship.
Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business, Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
