Hudson Valley Standards In Game Against Navy Prep
Newport, R.I., October 21 - The Hudson Valley Community College football team suffered a 41-28 defeat against Navy Prep this afternoon, but two Vikings battled their way into the Troy college's record books.
First-year wide receiver Shawn Miller (Troy) had 11 catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns, smashing Hudson Valley's mark for receptions in a game. The old mark (nine catches) was held by Tyrone Howard (1998 vs. RPI JV) and Herb Sexton (1990 vs. Westchester Community College). Miller's 172 receiving yards is also the third-best single-game total in Hudson Valley history. He made his debut as a Viking by tallying 177 yards against Lackawanna Junior College in this season's opening week, missing Jay Kearney's 1990 record by just three yards.
Miller now has 33 receptions for 649 yards and seven touchdowns.
In the first quarter against Navy Prep, second-year tailback Gary Jones (Ravena) scored his 15th rushing touchdown of the season, surpassing Dennis Green's 1971 record (14 touchdowns).
Freshman quarterback Justin Kastner (Hudson) had a strong day for Hudson Valley, completing 18 of 33 passes for a career-high 272 yards. Fullbvack Delino White (East Allegheney, PA) ran for 109 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
The loss drops Hudson Valley to 5-3. Navy Prep improved to 2-4. Hudson Valley closes out its 2000 campaign on the road, traveling to Springfield's JV for an 11 a.m. contest on Sunday, October 29.
