Troy, October 8 - The Hudson Valley Community College football team played a smothering defense against Union's JV today, recording a 40-0 victory. The Vikings improved to 4-2 with the win (2-2 in the Northeast Football Conference). The loss drops Union's JV to 1-2.
The Vikings picked off six passes and held Union to 59 yards through the air. Jim Canfield (Troy) contributed two interceptions for the second time this season, giving him four picks in 2000. Derrick Black (Tarboro, NC) had four solo tackles, a pass breakup and an interception, improving his NFC-leading total to five interceptions. Casey Bardin (Corinth), Keith Hill (Schenley, PA) and Paul Abed (Troy) contributed one interception each. Hill also had four tackles, a quarterback sack and two pass breakups. Defensive tackle Greg Barthelemy (Irvington, NJ) helped Hudson Valley stop Union's ground attack - the Vikings held Union to 94 yards on 47 carries (2.0 yards per carry) - recording 12 tackles (six solo) and two quarterback pressures.
Quarterback Justin Kastner (Hudson) threw for three touchdowns, including two to Shawn Miller (Troy). Gary Jones (Ravena) rushed two scores and a game-high 105 yards.
Hudson Valley travels to Alfred State for an NFC matchup at 1:30 p.m. on October 14.

Hudson Valley's football program was established in 1969. At the time, Hudson Valley was one of only two junior colleges in New York to field a varsity football team. Since then, nearly 300 Hudson Valley football players have earned scholarships to four-year schools and 15 have gone on to play professionally. The Vikings competed in the Coca Cola Bowl in Iowa in 1980. In 1996, Hudson Valley posted an 8-0 record, part of dominant stretch that included 15 straight victories.
