Troy, September 23 - Hudson Valley Community College's football team evened its record with a 39-9 thumping of Northeast Football Conference (NFC) rival Dean Junior College at Veteran's Memorial Stadium today. Playing under windy conditions, the Vikings (2-2, 1-2 NFC) used a strong third quarter and a solid defensive effort to pull away from Dean (2-1, 1-1 NFC).
Leading 12-9 with 12:41 left in the third quarter, Hudson Valley's La'Ronn Paulk (Corcoran, NJ) forced a fumble at Dean's 42-yard line. Linebacker Keith Hill (Schenley, PA) scooped the ball up and rumbled to Dean's 10. As Dean defenders dragged Hill down, he tossed the ball defensive end Deshong Roach (Kingston), who took it in for his first collegiate touchdown.
About five minutes later, Gary Jones (Ravena) scored his second rushing touchdown of the game. The Vikings never looked back, and Jones led all running backs with 123 yards on 23 carries. Quarterback Justin Kastner (Hudson) closed out the scoring in the third quarter with a one-yard keeper. Derrick Black (Tarboro, NC) added some excitement in the fourth quarter, returning an interception 98 yards for a touchdown, the longest interception return in Hudson Valley history. Jim Canfield (Troy) also had two interceptions for the Vikings.
Hudson Valley travels to SUNY Canton for a 1:30 p.m. contest on September 30.
