Hudson Valley Community College's Carlos Molina (South Boston, MA) was named Northeast Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week today. Molina, a 6-foot, 192-pound outside linebacker earned the honor for his efforts in Hudson Valley's 14-12 loss to SUNY Morrisville on September 16.
Molina seemingly broke through Morrisville's offensive line at will, recording five tackles (four solo) and four quarterback sacks. Molina's four sacks, which cost Morrisville 30 yards, tied Hudson Valley's single-game record, set in 1991 by Jim Brown, against Army's JV. Brown went on to play at the University of Kentucky and in the World Football League. His brother, Tim Brown, formerly of the New Orleans Saints and Albany Firebirds, also played for Hudson Valley.
Molina will be in action again at 1:30 p.m. on September 23 as Hudson Valley (1-2, 0-2 NFC) hosts Dean Junior College (2-0, 0-0 NFC). The game will be played at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in Troy.
Hudson Valley's football program was established in 1969. At the time, Hudson Valley was one of only two junior colleges in New York to field a varsity football team. Since then, nearly 300 Hudson Valley football players have earned scholarships to four-year schools and 15 have gone on to play professionally. The Vikings competed in the Coca Cola Bowl in Iowa in 1980. In 1996, Hudson Valley posted an 8-0 record, part of dominant stretch that included 15 straight victories.
