Troy, September 10 - The first two drives set the tone for the day as Hudson Valley shut Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's JV down and out, 39-0, in front of a packed house at Veteran's Memorial Field. Hudson Valley returned the opening kickoff to its own 32-yard-line and then proceeded to chew up 8:16 with a 17-play drive, which ended with a 22-yard field goal by James Muscatello (Cohoes). Following a Hudson Valley kickoff, RPI fumbled on its first play and failed to recover. Hudson Valley's Gary Jones (Ravena) scored on a three-yard run just three plays later. The Vikings (1-1) never looked back. RPI (0-1) crossed midfield just three times and picked up only four first downs.
In a textbook display of ball control, the Vikings owned the football for 12:00 in the first quarter and 43:02 on the game. RPI had the football for just 16:58 during the contest. Hudson Valley racked up 469 yards of offense (220 rushing, 249 passing) and held the Engineers to just 46 yards (2 rushing, 44 passing). Hudson Valley forced six turnovers and committed none.
Jones, who left the game early in the third quarter, ran for 55 of his game-high 59 yards in the first half and tied Hudson Valley's mark for rushing touchdowns in a contest (three). Muscatello scored nine points, booting two field goals and three extra points. Wide receiver Shawn Miller (Troy), who sat most of the second half as Hudson Valley's reserves got some action, hauled in five passes for 129 yards. Lamar Grier (South Plainfield, NJ) scored two rushing touchdowns. Justin Kastner (Hudson) threw for 183 yards, completing six of eight passes.
The Vikings travel to SUNY Morrisville for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday, September 16.

Since then, nearly 300 Hudson Valley football players have earned scholarships to four-year schools and 15 have gone on to play professionally. The Vikings competed in the Coca Cola Bowl in Iowa in 1980. In 1996, Hudson Valley posted an 8-0 record, part of dominant stretch that included 15 straight victories.
