Only Local College Football Game Slated For Sunday
� � � � The Hudson Valley Community College football team will attempt to rebound from a narrow opening week loss - the Vikings dropped a 28-21 decision to Lackawanna Junior College - by hosting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's JV squad at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 10. This non-league matchup, the only local college football game on the schedule for Sunday, will be played at Veteran's Memorial Stadium, which is located on the Hudson Valley campus, directly behind the McDonough Sports Complex. � � � � Freshman wide receiver Shawn Miller (Troy) provided Hudson Valley's offensive power against Lackawanna, grabbing four passes for two touchdowns and 177 yards. He finished his debut game as a Viking just three yards shy of Hudson Valley's single-game receiving record. Other local products expected to contribute against RPI include: tailback Gary Jones (Ravena), who rushed for 72 yards against Lackawanna, quarterback Jason Owens (Albany), linebacker Tyler Frank (Lake George), wide receiver Paul Zurlo (Mechanicville), defensive back Jim Canfield (Troy), offensive lineman Dan Bailey (Colonie) and kicker James Muscatello (Cohoes). � � � � Hudson Valley finished with a 4-4 record in 1999. RPI's JV was 1-4-1. The Vikings defeated RPI's JV, 35-6, last year. � � � Hudson Valley's football program was established in 1969. At the time, Hudson Valley was one of only two junior colleges in New York to field a varsity football team. Since then, nearly 300 Hudson Valley football players have earned scholarships to four-year schools and 15 have gone on to play professionally. The Vikings competed in the Coca Cola Bowl in Iowa in 1980. In 1996, Hudson Valley posted an 8-0 record, part of dominant stretch that included 15 straight victories.
