The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team was defeated 11-8 as faced off against the Herkimer Generals in the Region 3 Final Four on Thursday evening at Falcon Park in Auburn, NY.
The game featured a lot of momentum shifts, which began with Herkimer jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Marvin Hill ripped a two-run double down the right center gap, scoring Jaden Madrid and Jacob Severson.
Hudson Valley responded with a seven-run second inning. Sparked by key at-bats by Matthew Carrera and Tyree Jackson, the Vikings capitalized on a combination of hits, walks and hit batters to swing the momentum back in favor of Hudson Valley.
Carrera's two-run single and Jackson's two-RBI infield single ignited the rally, with Nick DeSanto adding a two-run single of his own to cap the inning. By the end of the frame, the Vikings held a commanding 7-2 lead.
Herkimer started to inch away at the Vikings deficit, scoring a couple of runs in the fourth and sixth inning to bring the score to 8-4, Hudson Valley. In the seventh inning, Herkimer returned the favor and posted seven runs on the Vikings, which began with RBI hits from Zowen Collins and Obiel Sanchez. The Generals put the stamp on the game when Shiryu Sato connected for a grand slam home run over the left field wall and ultimately giving the Generals the 11-8 win.
Carrera led the Vikings with three hits, going 3-for-5 at the plate with 3 RBIs. Jackson added two hits, including a double, two RBIs and a stolen base. Niko DeSanto added two RBIs and a walk.
Hudson Valley used three pitchers. Starter Alex Deitz went 5 innings allowing 3 earned runs. Relievers Jake O'Connor and Hunter Stolov (L, 4-2) combined to allow eight more, with Stolov surrendering the grand slam.
Hudson Valley is not out of the race yet as they are set to take on Finger Lakes in an elimination game tomorrow, Friday, May 16th at 3:30 PM at Falcon Park in Auburn, NY.
