Baseball Slams Jefferson for Season Sweep

The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team completed the season sweep of Jefferson after defeating the Cannoneers 14-4 and 13-3 in the two home games on Saturday afternoon at Joe Bruno Stadium on the campus of HVCC.

GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 14, Jefferson 4 (5 Innings)

Following a quick 3-0 lead, the Vikings gave up four runs in the top of the third inning, allowing the Cannoneers to take over the game for just a brief moment. In the bottom of the third inning, the Vikings offensive exploded for nine runs and then closed out the game with another two runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 10-run victory.

The third inning was what secured the win for the Vikings as Mike Talavera, Jaden Ross, Colin Lynch and Aidan Chrysler all drove in runs in the inning. The big hit came from Lynch, who connected one the first pitch of his at-bat for a no-brainer grand slam home run over the left field fence. Bryaden Mann also hit a home run in the game. His home run came in the second inning, a two-run shot over the left field wall.

Hudson Valley sent their left-handed ace, Luis Misla, to the mound and he tossed a complete-game, five-innings, and allowed four runs on eight hits. Misla also struck out eight batters and did not walk a batter.

Three Vikings collected two hits or more in the game, all three sits atop the batting order and combined to hit 6-for7 with eight runs scored and three RBIs. Talavera finished the game 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Tj Strevell also went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and one walk. Josh Foglia went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and one RBI.

GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 13, Jefferson 3 (5 Innings)

In the final game, the Vikings scored in all five innings, which was highlighted by a big eight-run fourth inning to pull away and secure its second 10-run victory of the day.

Strevell and Talavera collected a pair of hits again as eight started recorded at least one hit in the game. Talavera went yard in the third inning as he launched a pitch over the left field wall. Anthony Rizzo and Jeremy Taggart also collected two hits as they combined to hit 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs.

As a team, the totaled 12 hits and stole an insane 14 bases on the Cannoneers. Eight individuals tallied the 14 stolen bases and were led by Talavera, who swiped three bags and Jaden Ross, Foglia, Taggart and Alexander Marino tallied two stolen bags each.

The Vikings earned the win with a pitching committee of Dominick Persichilli and Kwintin Nurse. The duo combined to pitch 5.0 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits, five walks and two strikeouts.

ON DECK:

The Vikings have a big week coming up and it begins tomorrow, Sunday, April 23 when they travel to take on Cayuga for a Region 3 doubleheader. Cayuga just split a four-game series against top-seed Herkimer, so this series is expected to be one of the toughest games of the season. The doubleheader begins at 12 p.m.
