Baseball Earns Road Split at Genesee

The Hudson Valley Community College baseball program earned a road series split against Genesee on Saturday afternoon in Batavia, NY.

GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 5, Genesee 4

The Vikings received a gem of a game from starting pitcher Luis Misla, who tossed a complete game and allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out 11 batters to help the Vikings end its four-game losing streak.

Jeremey Taggart had a nice day at the plate as he finished the game 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Taggart an RBI double in the fourth inning that allowed Brayden Mann to score what proved to be the winning run of the game as the Vikings took a 3-2 advantage over the Cougars.

Colin Lynch connected for a lead-off solo home run in the third inning, which helped spark the Vikings rally, which the Vikings evened the game up at 2-2.

In the sixth inning, Hudson Valley pushed their lead to 5-2 as they took advantage of a pair of passed balled, allowing Anthony Rizzo and Taggart to score during Tj Strevell's at-bat.

GAME TWO: Genesee 17, Hudson Valley 5 (5 Innings)

The second game got out of hand quickly as the Cougars jumped on starting pitcher, Cole Flannery for four runs on two hits in the first inning, which led to his quick exit in the opening inning. Genesee continued to build upon the quick start, which led to a 10-run third inning and a 17-3 lead.

The Vikings had a big inning in the second as they scored three runs. The inning started with back-to-back walks to Paul Fernandez and Aidan Chrysler. The next batter, Brendan Curry doubled down the left field line to score Fernandez. Josh Foglia followed it up with a bases-clearing triple and Mike Talavera singled home Foglia to continue the big rally.

In the third inning, Genesee put together six straight hits six runs during that span and the timely hitting continued with two outs to pull away from Hudson Valley for good.

The Vikings and the Cougars are back at it tomorrow, Sunday, April 16 with Hudson Valley hosted a doubleheader at Joe Bruno Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. on the campus of HVCC.
