The Hudson Valley Community College baseball traveled to Arnold, Maryland for a four-game series against Anne Arundel to kick off the 2023 baseball season. In the first day, the Vikings dropped both games of the doubleheader on Saturday, 2-1 and 5-2, respectively.

Both games were close, competitive games as the series at Anne Arundel is a good test for the Vikings as they expect to compete for a Regio 3 title by the end of the season.

Game One: Anne Arundel 2, Hudson Valley 1 (7 innings)

The first game proved to be a pitching duel, which was started by Luis Misla, a 2022 All-Region pitcher. Misla took the loss after tossing 3.2 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) while striking out four and walking four. Aidan McPhail entered the game in relief and tossed 2.1 innings, walking three and striking out a pair.

Trailing the Riverhawks 2-0, the Vikings managed to score a run as Jaden Ross scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. Ross reached on a fielder's choice and later stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Foglia, which set up the run on a wild pitch.

Colin Lynch collected the Vikings only hit of the game in the fifth inning as he singled through the left side of the infield.

Game Two: Anne Arundel 5, Hudson Valley 2 (7 innings)

In the second game, the Vikings offense came to life, collecting seven hits and scored a pair of runs. Josh Foglia finished a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles, one run scored and one RBI. Mike Talavera (2B), Juan Abreu and Brendan Curry also collected hits.

HVCC scored both of their runs in the fifth inning, which started with a leadoff walk to TJ Strevell. Strevell later scored on Foglia's double to left field and advanced on the throw home, in an attempt to get Strevell at the plate. An error by the catcher allowed Foglia to score an unearned run.

Jacob Lapham took the mound to start the game for Hudson Valley and tossed 3.0 innings and allowed only two runs on two hits, while striking out five batters. Cole Flannery entered the game in relief for the next 2.1 innings, where he allowed three runs on six hits and Albert Vargas closed out the game, securing the final two outs of the game, with one strikeout.
