Baseball Sweeps Jefferson

The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team got back to its winning ways after sweeping Jefferson 19-2 and 5-1 in the respective series in Watertown, NY.  

GAME ONE: Hudson Valley 19, Jefferson 2 (5 innings) 

In the opening game, starting pitcher Jacob Lapham had more than enough runs support by the Vikings offense as they put up 19 total runs in the five-inning game, the most runs the Vikings have scored in a game this season. Lapham tossed a complete game and allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out five batters.

Offensively, the Vikings jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after the first inning. They started the game off with three straight hits and a walk before recording the first out of the inning. Fast-forward to the fifth inning, the Vikings posted another six runs in the inning to pull even farther away from Jefferson.

Mike Talavera led the Vikings offense with four hits in his five at-bats. He connected on pitches for three singles and a triple. He also scored a pair of runs and drove in two RBIs.

GAME TWO: Hudson Valley 5, Jefferson 1 

In the final game of the day, Freddie Callo earned the start and tossed a complete game, giving up one run on three hits and struck out six batters. 

Hudson Valley jumped out early to give Callo the opportunity to pitch with the lead for the entire game. Jaden Ross got the offense started with a lead-off single. After he was caught stealing, Talavera connected for a triple and later scored the game's first run of the game on an RBI single by Ian Martinez

Ross would later score two runs in the third and fifth inning to help extend the Vikings lead over the Cannoneers. Ross was one of four Vikings to finish with game with two hits. Talavera, Martinez, and Tj Stevell all collected two hits and combined to go 8-for-11 at the plate. 

UP NEXT

The baseball team heads goes back on the road this Saturday, May 7 when they travel to take on Adirondack in a key Region 3 matchup as the Vikings look to solidify a sub-regional postseason berth. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m. in Queensbury, NY.
