The Hudson Valley Community College baseball program earned a series split against ASA Brooklyn, which included a seventh consecutive win before failing in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Joe Bruno Stadium on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.
Game One: Hudson Valley 7, ASA Brooklyn 3
The Vikings utilized a trio of pitchers in game one, whom all played an essential part in keeping ASA Brooklyn off of the scoreboard for the Vikings seventh straight win. James Rubino (North Greenbush/LaSalle Institute) was tabbed as the starter and tossed two complete innings before being relieved by Carson Stewart (East Greenbush/Columbia).
Stewart earned the win as he pitched three shutout innings and allowed only two hits while striking out a game-high six batters. Dylan Sheely (Alplaus/Niskayuna) earned the save as he closed out the final two innings of the game. Sheely tossed two shutout innings and struck out two batters.
ASA jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Derrick Miller (Westernville/Rome Free Academy) led off the game with a double to the fence in right centerfield and eventually scored after stealing third base and later advanced home on a wild pitch by ASA to tie the game at 1-1.
Two batters later, Jackson Wenstrom (Mandan, N.D./Mandan) sent a moonshot over the right centerfield fence to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead. Vicente Mendoza (Norwood, Mass./Xavierian) and Anthony Raimo (Guilderland/Christian Brothers Academy) both hit solo home runs in the fifth inning to secure the Vikings their seventh straight win. Raimo finished with a team-high two RBIs.
Game Two: ASA Brooklyn 11, Hudson Valley 3
In the second game, freshman pitcher Brian Lineback (Delanson/Mohonasen) earned the start and provided two shutout innings with one hit and one walk. Robert Spagnola (Amsterdam/Amsterdam) relieved Lineback and gave up four runs on four hits to record the loss for the Vikings.
As a team, Hudson Valley tallied six hits with two RBIs in game two. Angelo Spataro (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) and Wenstrom recorded one RBI each. Spataro's RBI came in the first inning as he cleared the bases with a double in the gap.
Ben Grant (Guilderland/Guilderland) reached base on a single in the fifth and scored on Wenstrom's RBI single later in the inning. Jimmy Griffin (Watervliet/Watervliet) recorded an at-bat and popped out to second base for the second out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Hudson Valley returns to Region 3 action as they are scheduled to travel to Fulton-Montgomery for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9. Game one is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
