Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (3-5) were victims of the mercy rule as the Vikings were defeated 11-1 by Monroe College in five innings on Thursday afternoon in Bronx, N.Y.

As a team, the Vikings collected three hits and committed four errors as the Monroe Mustangs used a seven run third inning to put the game out of reach for Hudson Valley.

The Vikings scored its lone run of the game in the fourth inning as Brendan Haverty (Troy/La Salle) was awarded home plate following a balk by the Mustangs pitcher. The Vikings couldn't take advantage of a pair of walks they earned in the inning as Monroe was bailed out by their solid defense, leaving two Vikings runners on base.

Nick Hansen (Troy/La Salle) connected on a double down the left field line, giving the Vikings an opportunity to extend the game and preventing the mercy rule to end the game early. Chris Kordziel (Rotterdam/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) entered the game as a pinch runner, but the Vikings couldn't take advantage as Nick Thomas (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) went down swinging to end the fifth inning.

The Vikings are scheduled to have its home opener on Tuesday, April 10 as they welcome Mohawk Valley to Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y with the first pitch expected around 2 p.m.
