Vikings Split with Montgomery

Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (3-4) split their doubleheader match up against Montgomery Community College (PA) on Saturday afternoon and finished their spring trip winning three of their final four games.

Game One: Hudson Valley 14, Montgomery 2

The Vikings offense came ready to play as the team combined for six runs in the first two innings, including five runs in the second inning. Jonathan Montesanti (Niskayuna/Colonie) collected a team-high three base hits led six Vikings with multiple hits in game one against Montgomery. Montesanti also finished with a game-high five RBIs.

Derek Miller (Westernville/Rome Free Academy) scored four runs on two hits and drove in a pair of RBIs. Jackson Wenstrom (Mandan, N.D./Mandan) continued to swing a hot bat as he collected another two hits to extend his multi-hit game streak to five straight games.

Nick Hansen (Troy/La Salle) hit his first career home run when he connected on a 1-1 pitch in the fifth inning, extending the Vikings lead to 9-0.

James Rubino (North Greenbush/La Salle) earned his first collegiate win after tossing five complete innings and gave up two runs on three hits with five strikeouts.

Game Two: Montgomery 5, Hudson Valley 4

The Vikings came up short in their comeback attempt in game two against Montgomery. The Vikings entered the fifth inning trailing 5-1 and responded with three runs to cut their deficit to one run.

Hudson Valley had its first four batters reach base in the fifth inning, which included a double by Jacob LaFerriere (Troy/La Salle). LaFerriere later scored on a fielder's choice. Miller entered the game as a pinch hitter and tallied an RBI single to drive in Wenstrom. Unfortunately, the Vikings were unable to rally in the final two innings of the game.

The game had seven Vikings collect hits as the team tallied seven hits in 32 at-bats.

On-Deck:

 The Vikings are back in action on Thursday, April 5 when they travel to play Monroe College for a single, 9-inning game. The expected start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
