Baseball Earns First Win with Doubleheader Split

Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (1-3) earned their first win of the 2018 season on Tuesday evening after defeating Bucks County Community College 18-8 in Aberdeen, Maryland. The Vikings also dropped the opening game of the day 9-2 against Camden County.

Game One: Camden County 9, Hudson Valley 2

The Vikings had a better day at the plate in the first game of the day as the team collected six hits in their loss to Camden County. Jackson Wenstrom (Mandan, N.D./Mandan) and Nick Thomas (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) continued to hit the ball well as they each recorded an extra-base hit in consecutive days.

Defensively, the Vikings had four errors which benefitted Camden, allowing them to take advantage of the additional at-bats.

Jimmy Griffin (L,0-1) (Watervliet/Watervliet) started on the mound for Hudson Valley and went three strong innings. Griffin did not give up a hit, but he allowed five walks and two runs. Dylan Sheely (Alplaus/Niskayuna) relieved Griffin and pitched the fourth and fifth innings. Sheely allowed four runs on three hits and tallied four strikeouts.

 Jacob Shippey (Charlton/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lakes) relieved Sheely and tossed two innings, giving up one run on one hit with a pair of walks. Mathew Wilson (Albany/Albany) closed out the remaining two innings and allowed two runs on two hits. As a team, the pitching staff allowed nine runs on six hits and allowed a season-high nine walks to Camden.

Game Two: Hudson Valley 18, Bucks County 8

The Vikings bats woke up against Bucks County as the team produced 18 runs on 16 hits, including an 11-run fourth inning explosion. Wenstrom continued his hot hitting as he recorded his third straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush/La Salle Institute) and Ryan Starr (Schenectady/Mohonasen) each collected three hits for Hudson Valley. Pezzolla went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Starr finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and added a pair of RBIs. As a team, the Vikings had five student-athletes record two or more hits on the day.

Jacob LaFerriere (W, 1-0) (Troy/La Salle Institute) recorded the Vikings first win of the season as he tossed five complete innings and allowed four runs on six hits. Joe Warner (Colonie/Christian Brothers Academy) and Austin Novak (Ravena/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) relieved LaFerriere for the remaining two innings to preserve the Vikings win.

The Vikings return to action on Wednesday in an attempt to avenge yesterday's defeats as they travel to play another doubleheader against Frederick at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
