The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (3-1) split with Mohawk Valley Community College (4-8) on Sunday afternoon. The Vikings took game one, 18-1, but fell to the Hawks in game two, 7-0.
Ryan Smith (Hancock/Hancock) earned the win on the mound in game one, throwing a one-hitter with seven strikeouts in five innings of work. Brandon Martinez (River Dell/River Edge, NJ) and Zach Farias (New Fairfield/New Fairfield, CT) led the Vikings with two hits and three RBIs each. Joe Bender (Guilderland/Guilderland) and Kyle McAlonie (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) each added two hits in the lopsided win.
The Vikings failed to push any runs across in game two and were shutout by the Hawks. Travis Sowards (Columbia/East Greenbush) tossed five and a third innings allowing no earned runs, and Connor McDonough (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) led the Vikings on offense with two hits.
The Vikings travel to Jefferson Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
