The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (2-0) won both games of a doubleheader against Columbia-Greene Community College (1-8) on Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings took game one, 4-0, and followed that up with a 13-0 win in game two.
The Hudson Valley pitching staff led the way in both games allowing no runs in 12 total innings. Ryan Smith (Hancock/Hancock) struck out seven in fiving innings in game one, and Kyle Hall (Maple Hill/Castleton) came in relief to preserve the shutout. The Vikings got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first, and Brandon Martinez (River Dell/River Edge, NJ) brought home Jeff Bink (Colonie/Colonie) in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Joe Bender (Guilderland/Guilderland) provided an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI-single to make it 4-0, and Hall closed the door in the seventh on the Twins.
In the second game, freshman Caleb Gregg (Chatham/Chatham) earned his first collegiate win in his debut on the mound, working four scoreless innings on three hits and five strikeouts. Matt Sand (CBA/Altamont) and Ben Julian (Troy/Troy) led the team with two RBIs each, as the Vikings pounded out 14 hits in the 13-0 win. Martinez, Bender, Julian, Connor McDonough (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh), and Liam Kelly (Catholic Central/Clifton Park) each had multi-hit games in the game two victory.
The Vikings host Columbia-Greene on Thursday at 2 p.m.
