The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (1-1) split with #2 Gloucester County College (4-4) on Sunday afternoon. The Vikings lost 21-3 in game one and won game two, 8-7.
Hudson Valley got off to a slow start in game one. Bradley Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) led the Vikings going 3-3 at the plate with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Eric Mueller (Bethlehem/Glenmont) went 2-3 in his debut with two RBIs and two steals in the loss.
Game two was a different story as the Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Gloucester fought back late in the game and took a 7-5 lead into the seventh inning. Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) drove in the tying run and then Mike Sunkes (Catholic Central/Waterford) hit a sac fly to give the Vikings an 8-7 lead. Gloucester threatened in the bottom half of the inning with the tying run on second with one out, but a line drive double play ended the game. Mike Verschelden (Chatham/Ghent) got the win on the mound and Mike Slingerland (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake/Burnt Hills) earned the save. Matt Sand (CBA/Altamont) went 3-4 with two doubles, and Mueller went 2-3 again at the plate.
The Vikings travel to Suffolk next Saturday for a doubleheader at noon.
