The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (18-20) defeated Clinton Community College (7-21) 6-2 in game one, and 4-3 in extra innings in the second game on Tuesday afternoon.
In game one, Sean Geisel (Guilderland/Guilderland) led the Vikings, going 3-4 with three RBIs, while Andrew Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) went 2-3 with three runs scored. Dennis Buckley (Christian Brothers Academy/Colonie) added a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to give the Vikings a 4-2 lead. It was enough for Josh Temple (Cohoes/Cohoes) to earn the win on the mound, striking out eight batters allowing only one walk. In game two, Clinton scored an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning, but centerfielder Andrew Kozak threw a runner out at home to keep the deficit at 3-2. Heading into the bottom half of the inning, Tanner Cornacchini (Rhinebeck/Rhinebeck) kept the Vikings post-season hopes alive with a two-out, two-run, walk-off single. Michael Brienza (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake/Ballston Lake), who earned the save in game one, earned the win in relief in game two.
The baseball team hosts Columbia-Greene Community College in a make-up game on Thursday, May 3 at 3 p.m. to close the regular season.
