The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (13-18) defeated Columbia-Greene Community College (12-12) 7-6 in extra innings on Sunday afternoon. Game two of the doubleheader was postponed due to weather.
The Vikings trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but three runs in the sixth cut the lead in half. Dennis Buckley (Christian Brothers Academy/Colonie) singled up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, forcing extra innings. Matt Leonardo (Colonie/Colonie) led off the eighth inning with a hit by pitch and, a few batters later, Dalton Wheeler (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) drove in the game-winning run. Wheeler also got the win on the mound after pitching 3 1/3 innings allowing only one hit and making three strikeouts.
The baseball team hosts Jefferson Community College on Tuesday, April 24 at 2 p.m.
