The Hudson Valley Community College softball and baseball teams have each been selected to participate in their respective NJCAA Region III Division III Tournaments and will play first round games on Tuesday, May 9.
The Lady Vikings finished the regular season with a 28-9 record and are the tournament's fourth seed. Hudson Valley will host No. 5 Herkimer County Community College at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Hudson Valley will be competing in its 20th consecutive Region III Tournament. The Lady Vikings have had record breaking years from pair of freshman. Tracy Chesebrough (Duanesburg/Duanesburg High School) has posted a 20-5 record on the mound this season and has a school single season record 260 strikeouts in 165 innings of work. Sarah Spellman (Bethlehem/Bethlehem High School) leads the team with a .451 batting average and has set single season records with 11 home runs and 50 RBI.
Hudson Valley's baseball team, which finished the year with a 26-18 record, is the tournament's seventh seed. Hudson Valley will visit No. 2 Herkimer at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Hudson Valley is looking for its 10th consecutive regional final four appearance.
Sophomore Tom Zink (Guilderland/Guilderland High School) is hitting .381 and recently became the college's all-time hits leader with 121 hits. Freshman Nate Novak (Hudson/Hudson High School) is 8-1 on the mound with a 1.50 earned run average. He also sports a .379 batting average.
Hudson Valley will host the Region III baseball final four for the fourth straight year and the softball final four for the first year. Both championships are a double elimination format and begin on Friday, May 12.
