The Hudson Valley Community College (12-9/5-0 Region III) baseball team swept a doubleheader at Columbia-Greene Community College (0-15/0-5 Region III) earlier today. Hudson Valley won the opener, 7-2, and took the nightcap, 4-1.
Freshman Matt LaValley (Schenectady/Guilderland High School) hit a two-run double to give Hudson Valley a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener. He finished the game two-for-four with three RBI. Sophomores Tom Zink (Guilderland/Guilderland High School) and Nick Testo (Wynantskill/Troy High School) each added two hits and an RBI in the opener.
Sophomore Phil Carr (Shandaken/Onteora High School) pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the win in the opener. He allowed four hits and struck out three, improving his record to 3-0 this season.
Hudson Valley took advantage of two Twins' errors to score three runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap. Zink also had an RBI single in the inning. Freshman Andrew Brickwedel (Troy/Catholic Central High School) was three-for-four in the game for Hudson Valley. LaValley added two more hits in the second game.
Carmello Cruz led Columbia-Greene with five hits in the doubleheader.
