Second-seeded Hudson Valley Community College and No. 1 Erie Community College advanced in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination NJCAA Region III tournament earlier tonight in Troy. Hudson Valley (32-13) defeated Herkimer County Community College (20-16), 9-1, in the first game. Erie (36-9) held on for an 11-8 win over Columbia-Greene Community College (25-7) in the nightcap.
Freshman Tom Zink (Rotterdam/Guilderland High School) and sophomore Dan Bruno (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) each had two hits and two RBI to lead Hudson Valley in the opener. Sophomore Paul Pietrowski (Beacon/Beacon High School) had three hits and an RBI, and freshman Nick Testo (Wynantskill/Troy High School) was two-for-three.
Sophomore pitcher Sean Rowland (Colonie/Colonie High School) went five innings to pick up the win on the mound for the Vikings. He allowed one run on six hits, striking out six and walking two. Sophomore K.K. Pierce (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) pitched three scoreless innings to earn the save. He allowed four hits.
Sophomore Chris Ortlieb (South Lewis) had two hits and an RBI to pace the Generals.
In the nightcap, freshman Clayton Brigham (West Seneca) was four-for-five with a home run and three RBI to lead Erie. Freshman Bill Kenyon (Hamburg) also drove in three runs for the Kats.
Sophomore Dennis Welch (Saugerties) had three hits and drove in four runs for Columbia-Greene.
