The Hudson Valley Community College (33-13) baseball team is seeded second in the 2005 NJCAA Region III Division III tournament, and will host No. 7 Schenectady County Community College (22-12) in an opening round game at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10.
Eight teams will compete in opening round games on Tuesday, and the four winners will advance to a double-elimination tournament this weekend at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on the campus of Hudson Valley. The winner of the tournament will represent Region III at the NJCAA Division III World Series on May 21-27 in Glens Falls.
Schenectady swept the season series with the Vikings, taking a 5-1 decision at home on April 12 and winning, 7-5, in Troy on April 28.
Hudson Valley sophomore pitcher William Lewis (Middletown/Middletown High School) leads the NJCAA with a 0.77 earned run average this season. He's struck out 50 batters in 47 innings pitched and sports a 6-2 record. Freshman Jesse Bulka (Summitt/Jefferson High School) leads Hudson Valley at the plate with a .446 average. Sophomore Dan Bruno (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) is batting .371 with 35 RBI and 16 stolen bases, and freshman Tom Zink (Rotterdam/Guilderland High School) is hitting .364 with three home runs, 29 RBI and seven stolen bases.
Schenectady is led at the plate this season by sophomore Rob Hisert (Amsterdam), who is hitting .418 with three home runs, 27 RBI and eight stolen bases. Sophomore Bob Studnicky (Fort Edward) is 4-1 on the mound with a 2.31 ERA. He's struck out 40 batters in 35 innings of work. Studnicky also has a .305 batting average. Freshman Dustin Cummings (Fair Haven, VT) is 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA. He's fanned 26 batters in 32 innings of work.
