The Hudson Valley Community College (42-10) baseball team defeated Erie Community College, 9-6, to remain alive in the NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament. However, Hudson Valley's season came to a close with an 8-6 loss to Columbia-Greene Saturday evening.
Sophomore Steve Sayre (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) finished two-for-three with a double and two RBI to lead the Vikings against Erie. Sophomores Kody Caulfild (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) and Elvis Climes (Middletown/Middletown High School) each drove in two runs.
Sayre and sophomore Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie, TX High School) each had two hits and two RBI for the Vikings against Columbia-Greene. Freshman Joel Molina (Middletown/Middletown High School) finished three-for-five at the plate and had two stolen bases.
Notes
Gijon-Owen will graduate from Hudson Valley as its all-time leader in hits (120), RBI (107), and doubles (34). He also had 10 home runs. Sayre, the 2004 Region III Player of the Year, set a school single season record with 23 doubles. In only one year, Climes became Hudson Valley's all-time stolen base leader with 45. Sophomore Jeremy Gulich (Horseheads/Horseheads High School) finished his illustrious career with a 12-4 record on the mound.
