The Hudson Valley Community College (40-8) baseball team, winner of 25 of its last 26 games, has earned the top seed in the NJCAA Region III Division III tournament. The Vikings will host Broome Community College at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
The winner of Tuesday's game will advance to a four-team double-elimination tournament on May 7-9 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy. The Region III tournament champion will advance to the NJCAA Division III World Series on May 22-28 in Batavia.
Hudson Valley has won eight Region III tournaments since 1960. The last trip to the World Series came in 2001.
Hudson Valley and Broome met last Sunday, April 25 in Troy. Hudson Valley won game one, 4-2, and the nightcap, 10-0.
Sophomore Steve Sayre (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) is batting .463 (68-for-147) with 22 doubles, four home runs and 53 RBI to lead Hudson Valley this season. Sophomore Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie, TX High School) is the only player in the college's history with 100 career hits (112) and 100 career RBI (102). He's batting .361 (52-for-144) with five home runs and 54 RBI this season.
