Vikings Tie Region III Record with 38 Wins
Sophomore Steve Sayre (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) had three hits and two RBI to lead the Hudson Valley Community College baseball team to a 9-2 win over Fulton-Montgomery Community College (13-18/9-13 Region III) in the opening game of a doubleheader played in Troy. Hudson Valley won the second game 11-3.
Hudson Valley, which has won 23 of its last 24 games, improves its record to 38-8 on the season and 20-2 in Region III games. The 38 wins ties a Region III record for wins in a season. Finger Lakes Community College had 38 wins in 1997. Hudson Valley will host a doubleheader with Genesee Community College at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, in the regular season finale. The Region III tournament seedings will be announced Sunday evening.
The Vikings opened up a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the opening game, which was the entire run support freshman pitcher William Lewis (Middletown/Middletown High School) would need. He scattered six hits and allowed two unearned runs to improve his record to 7-2 on the season. He struck out eight and walked one.
Freshman Craig Mastroianni (Colonie/Colonie High School) added two hits, and sophomore Bill Kelts (Waterford/Christian Brothers Academy) had a three-run double in the opening game.
The Vikings scored 10 runs over the final three innings to take the second game. Kelts, sophomore Anthony Montone (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) and sophomore Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie, TX High School) each had two hits for Hudson Valley in the nightcap. Sophomore Kyle Sharp (Cohoes/Shaker High School) added a two-run home run.
Freshman pitcher Anthony Bloomfield (Albany/Bishop Maginn High School) allowed three runs on eight hits to pick up the win for Hudson Valley. He struck out one and walked one.
