The Hudson Valley Community College (27-8) baseball team split a doubleheader with The College of Saint Rose (4-13) junior varsity team at Geer Field in Troy. Saint Rose won the opening game, 3-2, and Hudson Valley rebounded to take the nightcap, 13-3.
Sophomore Mike Murphy (New City/Clarkstown South) hit a two-run home run to center field to give Saint Rose a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the opening game, and freshman pitcher Bill Sheehan (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc Regional High School) limited the Vikings to two runs on three hits in seven innings of work. He struck out five and walked one.
Freshman Paul Pietrowski (Beacon/Beacon High School) had two hits and two stolen bases to lead the Vikings in the first game.
A two-run home run by sophomore Jon Callahan (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) sparked an eight-run third inning for the Vikings in the nightcap.
Sophomores Elvis Climes (Middletown/Middletown High School), Steve Sayre (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) and Carmine Berghela (Albany/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School) added two hits apiece for the Vikings.
