The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team rallied for five runs over the seventh and eighth innings to defeat Schenectady County Community College, 6-5, earlier today at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
Hudson Valley, ranked eighth in the latest NJCAA Division III poll, improved its record to 18-7 and 7-2 in Region III games. Schenectady fell to 7-9 and 3-2 in regional action.
The Vikings took their first lead of the game, 4-3, on back-to-back two-out RBI singles by sophomores Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie, TX High School) and Kody Caulfield (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) in the seventh inning.
Schenectady reclaimed the lead in the eighth inning with a two-run bloop single to right field by Frank Mausolf that put the Royals up 5-4.
An RBI double by Hudson Valley sophomore Elvis Climes (Middletown/Middletown High School) tied the contest in the bottom of the eight inning. Climes then stole third and came home with the winning run when the catcher's throw went into left field.
Gijon-Owen was three-for-four to lead the Vikings. Sophomore Jonathan Callahan (Schenectady/Schenectady High School) added two hits, including a double.
Freshman pitcher William Lewis (Middletown/Middletown High School) improved his record to 4-2 on the season. He pitched 5.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked three.
Catcher Rob Hisert paced Schenectady with three hits, including a double, and two RBI.
