The Monroe Community College (7-7) baseball team used strong outings from sophomore pitcher Seth Rademacker (Batavia) and freshman pitcher Ryan McLaughlan (Ottawa, Canada) to shutout Hudson Valley Community College earlier today in a doubleheader at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Monroe won the first game, 1-0, and the nightcap, 2-0.
Sophomore Brendan Rubenstein (Rochester) led off the opening game with an infield single and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by freshman Michael Zaccardo (Rochester). It would be the only run that Rademacker would need as he allowed only two hits in seven innings of work. He struck out seven Vikings.
Hudson Valley had a chance to tie the opener in the bottom of the seventh when a two-out hit by Joel Molina (Middletown/Middletown High School) hit the top of the left field fence and bounced back in the field of play, leaving Molina standing on second base.
Hudson Valley (10-5) was unable to capitalize on a solid pitching performance by sophomore Jeremy Gulich (Horseheads/Horseheads High School), who allowed only three hits and one run in seven innings of work. He fanned three.
Monroe plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the second game. Sophomore catcher Jason Socola (Henrietta) doubled in the go-ahead run with one out and would later score the insurance run on a two-out single by freshman Bryan Matt (Rochester).
McLaughlan allowed only three hits in seven innings of work. He struck out six and walked three.
Sophomore Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie, TX High School) had two hits for the Vikings.
