Sunday's First Pitch Moved to 10 a.m. in Anticipation of Inclement Weather
The Hudson Valley Community College (26-16) baseball team won two straight elimination games to remain alive in the NJCAA Region III tournament played today in Troy. Hudson Valley defeated Jamestown Community College, 7-1, in the opener and then eradicated Schenectady County Community College, 6-1, in today's final game.
Hudson Valley will meet Erie Community College, who defeated Schenectady 12-3 in today's winner's bracket contest, in the championship game on Sunday. First pitch, originally scheduled for 11 a.m., has been moved up to 10 a.m. due to potential inclement weather. Hudson Valley must win two games tomorrow to win the tournament and advance to the NJCAA national championship in Batavia on May 17-23.
Freshman Chris Salamida (Watervliet/Watervliet High School) was three-for-five including a two-run home run in the sixth inning to lead the Vikings past Jamestown. Freshman Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie, TX high School) finished three-for-five with two doubles and sophomore Daniel Barbero (Bronx/Lehman High School) added two hits for Hudson Valley in the opener.
Freshman pitcher Jeremy Gulich (Horseheads/Horseheads High School) improved his record to 6-0 on the year, allowing only one run on six hits. He struck out eight while walking only one.
Hudson Valley pounded out 15 hits against Schenectady. Gijon-Owen was three-for-five with three RBI. Barbero finished with three hits including two doubles. Sophomores Joan Cabrera (New York/George Washington High School) and Matt Nobles (Rensselaer/Bishop Maginn High School) added three hits apiece.
Salamida limited Schenectady batters to one run on seven hits. He fanned six against only one walk to move to 5-2 on the season.
Sophomore Demetrius Selby (Highland Falls) and Greg Sulz (Latham) had two hits apiece for Schenectady, who finish the season with a 27-6 record.
