Barbero Sets Hudson Valley Single-Season Record for Hits and Home Runs
The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team exploded for 14 runs on 16 hits and defeated Jefferson Community College 14-6 in the opening round of the NJCAA Region III tournament.
Hudson Valley (24-15), the tournament's fifth seed, advances to play top-seeded Schenectady County Community College on Friday in the Region III semifinals at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy.
Sophomore Daniel Barbero (Bronx/Lehman High School) hit a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to give Hudson Valley an early 2-0 lead. Barbero finished the day two-for-four with a home run, two RBI and four runs scored. His third-inning homer gave him the school single-season record for hits and home runs, surpassing current University at Albany catcher Jason Martin. Barbero currently has 66 hits and nine home runs on the year.
Hudson Valley also got four hits, including a double, and two RBI from sophomore Joan Cabrera (New York/George Washington High School). Sophomore Ryan Ratigan (Wynantskill/Averill Park High School) had three hits, including a home run, and three RBI. Sophomore Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie High School) contributed a double, two singles and three RBI.
Freshman pitcher Jeremy Gulich (Horseheads/Horseheads High School) ran his record to 5-0 on the season. He allowed only two runs, on six hits, over seven innings. Gulich struck out seven and walked only one.
