The Hudson Valley Community College (7-7) baseball team swept a doubleheader over Mohawk Valley Community College at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy. The Vikings won the first game 5-1 and the nightcap 8-1.
Sophomore right-hander Justin Maloney (Cohoes/Cohoes High School) allowed only one run on four hits to pick up his first win of the season in the opener. He fanned six over six innings.
Hudson Valley took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on consecutive RBI doubles by sophomore Joan Cabrera (New York/George Washington High School) and freshman Ryan Gijon-Owen (Puebla, Mexico/Bowie High School).
After Mohawk Valley had cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth, freshman Rashad Barksdale (Hudson/Hudson High School) hit a two-out, two RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning to spark a three-run inning that gave the Vikings a 5-1 advantage.
In the second game, sophomore Danny Barbero (Bronx/Lehman High School) was three-for-three with a home run, triple and four RBI to lead Hudson Valley. Freshman right-hander Jeremy Gulich (Horseheads/Horseheads High School) quieted the Mohawk Valley bats, allowing only three hits and one run over seven innings. He struck out six.
Hudson Valley will host Clinton Community College on Sunday, April 13. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
